Notations

of the Lübeck Martyrs

Besides their farewell letters the four clergymen left many other written notations. Here is a small selection.

• Eduard Müller, 27th of June, 1943

  “Reunion in happiness and joy”

  “It has always been my intention: To form and build Christ in you! We will bear the upcoming as entire heroes, for our life will not be taken but transformed, and then we will reunify in happiness and joy.”

  “I firmly believe”

  “With your strength, my Lord and Saviour, I take upon myself the load which God has chosen for me. Together with You I look to the Father in Heaven: Your will be done. Your will be done in me and by me.”

• Johannes Prassek in a letter

  “Cause for rejoycing”

  “For a long time now, I have not lived so calmly and blissfully as now. And now less than ever, slept so peacefully, although the electric light is on all night. How good is God to take away all fear and gives me joy and longing.”

  “Do you know what hunger is?”

  “Whatever you’re given to eat you devour. Boiled potatoes in their jacket naturally with their jacket, lest any nutriment be lost, stale and moldy bread you pick out of the waste bin, and the cold boiled, jacketed potatoes lying in the dog’s bowl in the sand, you collect like treasures and wipe them clean on your “clean” trousers and wolf them down.”
